Illustrating is also an act of witnessing: images compel us to notice and investigate\, and at their best\, they shed light on and at the same time critically confront the subjects they engage with.”\n—Nora Krug \nAward-winning artist Nora Krug’s powerful graphic memoir\, Belonging: A German Reckons With History and Home\, and her more recent book publication\, an illustrated edition of Yale historian Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century\, are the focus of an exhibition at the David Owsley Museum of Art. Each book takes inspiration from the artist’s personal experiences as well as the events of history through engagement with deep topical research\, museum artifacts and flea market finds\, vintage photography\, oral histories\, and personal conversations\, with the goal of trying to understand\, reckon with\, and depict the past in order to take something revelatory and useful away from it. \nThe exhibition was organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge\, MA\, and curated by Stephanie Haboush Plunkett\, Chief Curator.

SUMMARY:More than a Meal: Discovering Local History  and Culture Through Community Cookbooks
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 1\, 5:00-7:30 p.m.  Cost: $25 – Reservations required   LIMITED SEATING REGISTER ONLINE \nJoin us for an evening of history and food as we explore how community cookbooks reveal stories far beyond the kitchen. \nThe evening begins at 5 p.m. with exhibits featuring cookbooks\, recipes\, and aprons from local archives. At 5:30 p.m.\, a panel of historians will share insights into what can be uncovered by studying community cookbooks – highlighting women’s history\, family and community life\, organizational stories\, food traditions\, and cultural change. Students will learn how to create a classic Coptic-bound book by sewing together folded booklets (called signatures) to form a beautiful exposed spine that allows pages to lay perfectly flat. Participants will choose from an array of decorative and handcrafted papers to personalize their project\, making each book truly one of a kind. This historic binding technique is ideal for sketchbooks\, journals\, or creative projects that benefit from smooth page movement.
