SUMMARY:The Marriage of Figaro
DESCRIPTION:For their spring performance\, Ball State’s Opera Theatre program will present The Marriage of Figaro. \nThe Marriage of Figaro continues the plot of The Barber of Seville (which centers around Count Almaviva’s pursuit of Rosina) several years later\, and recounts a single “day of madness” (la folle journée) in the palace of Count Almaviva. Rosina is now the countess. Dr. Bartolo is seeking revenge against Figaro for thwarting his plans to marry Rosina himself\, and Count Almaviva has degenerated from the romantic youth of Barber\, into a scheming\, bullying\, skirt-chasing baritone. Having gratefully given Figaro a job as head of his servant-staff\, he is now persistently trying to exercise his feudal right to bed a servant girl on her wedding night (which he had prior relinquished in his courtship with the Countess) – with Figaro’s bride-to-be\, Susanna\, who is the countess’s maid. He keeps finding excuses to delay the civil part of the wedding of his two servants\, which is arranged for this very day. Figaro\, Susanna\, and the countess conspire to embarrass the count and expose his scheming. He retaliates by trying to compel Figaro legally to marry a woman old enough to be his mother\, but it turns out at the last minute that she really is his mother. Through the clever manipulations of Susanna and the countess and several hijinks along the way\, Figaro and Susanna are finally able to marry. \nOther Performances\nThis is the first of two performances. DESCRIPTION:The Faculty Artist Series features School of Music faculty sharing their talent and passion for music with the campus and community. This concert is free and open to the public. \nThis recital will also be offered as a livestream – visit the Concert Livestream Page to watch live. Streaming begins approximately 15 minutes prior to scheduled concert start time. Parking is available in the McKinley Parking Garage (entrance on Ashland Avenue) located immediately south of Sursa Hall. Metered parking is available on the first floor of the garage until 7 p.m. at which time parking is free. \nCritically acclaimed for her virtuosity and versatility\, oboist Lisa Kozenko performs internationally as a soloist\, chamber artist and orchestral musician. Ms. Kozenko has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Nova Filarmonia of Portugal\, the National Orchestra of New York\, the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico\, the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra and the Greenwich Village Orchestra. Concert engagements include performances at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.\, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago\, the Frick Collection in Pittsburgh and the Trinity Noonday Series\, Great Music in the Chapel Series\, and Merkin Concert Hall in New York City. \nCatherine Kautsky\, Chair of Keyboard at Lawrence University in Appleton\, WI\, has been lauded by the New York Times as “a pianist who can play Mozart and Schubert as though their sentiments and habits of speech coincided exactly with hers … The music spoke directly to the listener\, with neither obfuscation nor pretense.” She was the 2016 winner of the Lawrence Excellence in Teaching Award\, the 2013 winner of the university’s Faculty Convocation Award\, and in 2017 she was honored with the George and Marjorie Olsen Chandler Chair in Music.

DESCRIPTION:Art in Bloom is an annual celebration of the David Owsley Museum of Art (DOMA) featuring innovative floral interpretations created by regional designers. On Friday\, May 15\, DOMA will host a public “Preview Party” reception from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. featuring music\, a cash bar\, hors d’oeuvres\, and the first look at the flower arrangements. (Please note: the museum will be closed May 15 from 9am – 5pm for event set-up.) \nThe exhibition of floral arrangements will then be on view for the public May 16 and 17 with no admission fee and extended hours on both days. Join us for tours\, activities\, music and more (and parking at non-metered spots on Campus Drive on the Old Quad is free on weekends!). Guided by the Collections team\, guests will step beyond the public galleries into secure storage areas where military uniforms\, letters\, field equipment\, photographs\, and personal effects are carefully preserved. Each artifact carries a story—offering a rare opportunity to reflect on the lives and sacrifices of those who served. This tour may include standing\, stairs\, and exposure to loud HVAC noise. \nPreregistration is preferred; limited walk-in tickets may be available—please call ahead.
